Girl Scout Workshops

Make Jewelry while learning about the Hohokam!

Living in Tucson provides us an excellent backdrop of ancient history! Over 1,000 years ago Tucson was home to the Hohokam, learning about their culture provides us the opportunity to better understand our surroundings.

Studying the Hohokam culture encourages students to use their higher level thinking skills. As part of the workshop, the participants will use a culture wheel to break down the nine categories that define a culture, and will help them in the design of their very own piece of Hohokam inspired jewelry.

Learning Goals:
• Students will be able to identify elements of the Hohokam culture
• Students will be able to describe the importance of jewelry in the Hohokam’s material culture
• Students will be able to design and construct a beaded bracelet

Workshop Details:
• $10 per child/Minimum 6 children
• Session is approximately 2 hours long
• Students will design/construct a Hohokam inspired bracelet that they will take home with them that day!
• Bracelet materials will be presented in the form of kits (included in price)
• Children will select their own kit from an assortment of color choices
• Workshop materials can be modified for groups as young as second grade up to adult!

Excellent Book

I just finished reading The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. This book is such an excellent testament to the depth of friendship. I especially liked the knitting metaphors sprinkled throughout the book. I do enjoy knitting, while I'm not skilled at it, I do find it very calming. I think that one of the passages in the book speak to all crafters and the value of homemade items:
"Every knitter stitches with love, even when they are just starting, all red-faced and frustrated. Why else would we create? Especially in a world that doesn't need homemade anything. That's when we need homemade everything. It doesn't matter if things don't end up just the way you planned. Every moment is a work in progress; every stitch is one stitch closer." (p. 351)
I think with the everyday hustle and bustle of the world it is so nice to sit down and make something yourself. Whether it be a craft, a piece of art, or an excellent meal. I have been so blessed by the support of others in my endeavor to create a business from my crafting that I want to support others who are trying to do the same. I've mentioned before how impressed I've been with the quality of products on Etsy. I am going buy as many Christmas presents as I can from those with Etsy boutiques. I encourage you to look into it too! If you find a great product that you find share-worthy let me know! I will also post about the cool items I discover! Happy Shopping!
